In today's show Nadya reads an excerpt from from Willian Dalrymple's "Nine Lives", part of the chapter entitled Red Fairy. The book is about the search for the sacred in South Asia and Red Fairy features the Sufi saints of Sindh in Pakistan, specifically Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and Lal Shahbaz Qalander. Music to accompany the reading is by by Abida Parveen, Sanam Marvi, The Ali Khan Band, Ustad Sultan Khan, Junoon, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
Also, a couple of jazz pieces by Asha Puthli and Trilok Gurtu.

Lal Shahbaz Qalandar
he images of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar below are from a write-up by Dr. Jürgen Wasim Frembgen's on the Sahapedia website. Note the syncretic elements (Christian, Hindu, and Muslim, in the second image). Dr. Frembgen has worked extensively in Pakistan and written several books on the anthropological aspects of Sufism e.g. "Nocturnal Music in the Land of the Sufis".
